Get Involved!

One idea, many hands—and a garden in bloom.

When a Hyde-Addison parent shared their passion for gardening and suggested revitalizing our school’s raised garden bed, the PTA helped turn the idea into a reality. With support from families, volunteers and donors, we built a vibrant pollinator garden full of native plants—now blooming at our school entrance for all to enjoy.

This shared effort is about more than flowers. It’s about creating a welcoming space, offering hands-on learning for students and showing what we can accomplish when we work together.

This picture (left) was taken on our school-wide garden installation day—a true community effort that brought out families from across our school.

This is just one example of what’s possible when someone speaks up with an idea and the community rallies behind it.

Have an idea? A passion project? Let’s grow something great together!

Volunteer Opportunities

Throughout the year, we host events, coordinate volunteer opportunities, and keep families informed and engaged. We invite you to share your ideas, lend a hand and find your place in our PTA. Whether big or small, every contribution matters. Together, we can create a joyful, enriching experience for every Hyde-Addison student and family!

Volunteering through the PTA is one of the most meaningful ways to support our school. Whether you have ten minutes or ten hours, your time and energy help power everything we do—from teacher appreciation events to field trips, school-wide celebrations, enrichment programs and fundraising activities. Simply put: none of it is possible without volunteers.

Beyond the impact, volunteering builds connections—with your child’s school, with fellow families and with the greater Georgetown community. These relationships make our school stronger, more inclusive and more fun for everyone involved.

To read more about our established committees, please visit the “Committees” page under the “About” tab.

DCPS Volunteer Clearance

Interested in volunteering in the classroom or chaperoning a field trip? GREAT! DCPS requires all volunteers to complete a clearance process:

  • Submit a DCPS Clearance Application

  • Supervised volunteers (in staff presence) and unsupervised volunteers (e.g., chaperones) must complete clearance through DCPS, which includes a background check and fingerprinting. This may take time so we recommend starting the process early.

  • Exceptions:

    • You are a potential volunteer with an active secret or top-secret federal security clearance. Individuals in this group should first still complete the DCPS Clearance Application (linked above). In order to waive the fingerprinting requirement you must complete the Federal Security Clearance Verification Form; The form should be signed by the HR office at the granting agency. Send the signed verification form and a copy of a state issued photo ID to dcps.federalclearance@k12.dc.gov.

    • You are volunteering for a one-time, on-campus event, like Career Day or Field Day. Please email the Clearance Team at dcps.clearance@k12.dc.gov to confirm whether you qualify for a clearance exception.

  • Once you received your DCPS Volunteer Clearance Approval Letter, you will need to email a copy of it to hyde.addison@k12.dc.gov and your classroom teacher(s). Please keep in mind that the clearance typically expires two years from the date listed on the approval letter.

  • Please also review DCPS’s Expectations For School Visitors before coming on campus.
