DCPS Volunteer Clearance Process
Interested in volunteering in the classroom or chaperoning a field trip? GREAT! DCPS requires all volunteers to complete a clearance process:
Submit a DCPS Clearance Application
Supervised volunteers (in staff presence) and unsupervised volunteers (e.g., chaperones) must complete clearance through DCPS, which includes a background check and fingerprinting. This may take time so we recommend starting the process early.
Exceptions:
You are a potential volunteer with an active secret or top-secret federal security clearance. Individuals in this group should first still complete the DCPS Clearance Application (linked above). In order to waive the fingerprinting requirement you must complete the Federal Security Clearance Verification Form; The form should be signed by the HR office at the granting agency. Send the signed verification form and a copy of a state issued photo ID to dcps.federalclearance@k12.dc.gov.
You are volunteering for a one-time, on-campus event, like Career Day or Field Day. Please email the Clearance Team at dcps.clearance@k12.dc.gov to confirm whether you qualify for a clearance exception.
Once you received your DCPS Volunteer Clearance Approval Letter, you will need to email a copy of it to hyde.addison@k12.dc.gov and your classroom teacher(s). Please keep in mind that the clearance typically expires two years from the date listed on the approval letter.
Please also review DCPS’s Expectations For School Visitors before coming on campus.
